Program RequirementsCriminal Justice focuses on:
  • The study of law, crime, the criminal justice system and its various governmental agencies.
  • The history of the criminal justice subsystems and the formulation of conceptual models to understand governmental processes regarding the promulgation, enforcement and judgment of law.
  • The examination of governmental structures, the interaction of various levels of the criminal justice system.
  • An examination of different contexts and issues, such as:
    • Police use of force
    • Government interaction with citizens in light of 9/11
    • The rights of American citizens when accused by the government of criminal wrongdoing.

According to the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, “The purpose of higher education programs in criminal justice is to educate students to be critical thinkers who can communicate their thoughts effectively in oral and written form, as well as to instill a comprehensive knowledge of the field. The development of critical thinking, communication skills, and the ability to conceptualize ideas should be a primary objective of all criminal justice courses."

Criminal Justice majors qualify for many different careers in the law, state, local and federal government, law enforcement, corrections, probation, and private security.
