Scholarships
Communication Majors

Each year, GSC awards needs-based scholarships to assist Communication majors with tuition and book costs.  Incoming and returning students are eligible; submit a letter explaining how receiving a scholarship would assist you in your academic goals.  Scholarship recipients will be expected to write a letter of gratitude to the Foundation and give a speech at a Board of Trustees meeting.

Journalism Scholarships

Compass/Voice Scholarships
Students who make a commitment to serving in leadership positions for the Compass and the Voice are eligible to apply for scholarships funded by the Gainesville State College Foundation. Scholarships are awarded on a semester basis, and provide partial or full tuition remission.

Johnny Vardemann Scholarship
Johnny VardemanThe Johnny Vardemann Scholarship is offered to one GSC Journalism major each year.  Johnny Vardeman is a former editor of the Gainesville Times, Hall County, Georgia. This scholarship was founded in honor of his retirement. Mr. Vardeman continues his journalism career as a columnist in the Sunday issue and on-line Gainesville Times.

The criteria for the award is: 

Award to be $500 per semester to student demonstrating financial need

  1. Student with a journalism focus
  2. Resident of Georgia
  3. Participation on staff of Gainesville State College student newspaper is preferred
  4. Student may submit a sample of a previously published article or essay to enhance consideration

Selection process:  Scholarship recipients are chosen each semester by the Financial Aid Office.

Media Studies Scholarships

Students who make a commitment to completing multimedia and video projects on behalf of student organizations, campus newspapers, theatrical productions, and other campus/community based promotions are eligible to apply for scholarships funded by the Gainesville State College Foundation. Scholarships are awarded on a semester basis, and provide partial or full tuition remission.
