COUNSELING AND REFERRAL for Alcohol & Other Drugs Problems and Addictive Disorders
Gainesville State College provides counseling and referral to students who experience problems with their use of alcohol and other drugs (including prescription drugs, nicotine, caffeine, and others). Counselors can also help students who are struggling with other compulsive or addictive behaviors or substances (including pornography). On the Oconee campus, contact Doc Hawley if you would like to talk about your use. Appointments can be made through the online scheduler: http://www.uburst.com/cgi-bin/ureserve/hosted/gsc.pl.
Substance Abuse Evaluations
Gainesville State College students who have been court-ordered to obtain a Substance Abuse Evaluation can be assessed through the Office of Personal Counseling and Wellness. A nominal fee of $35 covers the entire process, from assessment through reporting to the appropriate authorities. To register for an evaluation, a student should make two (2) appointments on the online scheduler (
http://www.uburst.com/cgi-bin/ureserve/hosted/gsc.pl). The student must pay the fee in the front office of the Administration Building before reporting can occur.
PRIME for Life Information and Registration
PRIME for Life program is an evidence-based educational program about alcohol and other drugs risk reduction. A primary goal of PRIME For Life is prevention of any type of alcohol or drug problem. This includes prevention of health problems such as alcoholism, or impairment problems such as car crashes or fights. Emphasis is on knowing and understanding risks students cannot change and reducing risks they can change.
Students may be mandated by the court to participate or may enroll because of interest in reducing risk for themselves or others. In collaboration with Oconee Area Resource Council, Oconee County Schools, and local communities, Gainesville State-Oconee Campus conducts PFL programming for high school students; parent sessions are also offered.
Registration fee for GSC Students is $65 and should be paid in the business office of the Oconee Campus Administration Building prior to the start of the first session. The fee for high school participants is $50. We recommend that you register at least one week before the start of each session. SPRING 2013 PRIME for Life Programming

Important Notes about PRIME for Life Participation
If a student misses a class, he or she must take the course again (and pay the fee again), because the material is presented sequentially. No students are allowed to enter the classroom after the start of the session, and cannot return late when a short break is taken during a session. These regulations reflect court requirements for PFL courses. GSC students are also required to take an exam at the end of the class and schedule an individual appointment upon the conclusion of the class with the class facilitator.
Prime for Life staff reserve the right to withdraw any participant or to decline to re-enroll any participant who has exhibited inappropriate, disruptive conduct (including use of profanity). All participants are subject to the Gainesville State College Code of Conduct.
