The Accel Program is for students classified as high school juniors and seniors at accredited public or private high schools in the state of Georgia, and is operated in all school terms.  The program allows students to pursue postsecondary study at approved public and private colleges and technical colleges while receiving dual high school and college credit for courses successfully completed. Credit hours paid by the Accel Program for the student will count towards the limit of postsecondary hours paid for by the HOPE Program.  Grades for any college level classes taken prior to high school graduation do not count toward the student's college HOPE gpa.

An Academic Competitiveness Grant will provide up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year of undergraduate study to students who are enrolled at least half time, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and who had successfully completed a rigorous high school program, as determined by the state or local education agency and recognized by the Secretary of Education.  The Academic Competitiveness Grant was made available for the first time for the 2006-2007 school year for first-year college students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2006, and for second-year college students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2005.

Alternative loans are often used to supplement federal student loans, when federal loans are not sufficient to cover the full cost of education. Alternative loans are generally more expensive and should not be used until Federal Student Aid has been exhausted.  Be aware that alternative loan proceeds along with your total financial resources cannot exceed your cost of attendance, as determined by GSC.  Contact your lender for application procedures.

The Certificate of Eligibility is the document that the Department of Veterans Affairs mails to you after they have processed your Application for Veterans Educational Benefits, Form 22-1990.

Chapter 1606 is the Selected Reserve Educational Assistance Program of the Montgomery GI Bill.  You are eligible if you are currently active in a reserve unit and you have received a DD 2384 - Notice of Basic Eligibility from your unit.

Chapter 1607 is the Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP).  This new program makes certain reservists who were activated for at least 90 days after September 11, 2001 either eligible for education benefits or eligible for increased benefits.

Chapter 30 is the Active Duty Educational Assistance Program of the Montgomery GI Bill.  You are eligible if you were on active duty (after basic training and any military school) and had $100/month deducted from your pay for the first 12 months of your enlistment.

Chapter 33 is the Post 9/11 GI Bill.  You are eligible if you served at least 90 days of aggregate service after September 11, 2001.  Note: Once you elect to receive benefits under Chapter 33, you will NO longer be eligible to receive benefits under the program from which you elected the Post 9/11 GI Bill.

Chapter 35 is the Survivors' and Dependents' Education Assistance Program (DEA).  It provides education opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service related condition.

Your Cost of Attendance (COA) includes tuition and fees, room and board expenses while attending school, any costs related to a disability, and other miscellaneous expenses.  Your financial aid award cannot exceed your COA.

The DD 214 is the "Discharge Certificate" of your military service record.  The Financial Aid Office must receive a copy of your DD 214 prior to certifying your enrollment with the V.A.  Also, the Financial Aid Office will send a copy of your DD 214 to the Registrar's Office so that you will be awarded PHED 1020 and PHED 1000 for GSC's physical education requirement.

Your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is the number that’s used to determine your eligibility for federal student financial aid. This number results from the financial information you provided in your FAFSA application. Your EFC is reported to you on your Student Aid Report (SAR).

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the application that students must file to apply for aid from any Federal Student Aid program.

Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a federally subsidized campus-based student aid program that provides schools with funds for student employment.  FWS jobs pay between $7.25 and $10.00 per hour, working up to 19 hours per week.  Students offered FWS will be able to access positions on the GSC Job Board.  FWS awards may be adjusted at any time based on availability of funds.

You are placed on Financial Aid Probation in the event that you have less than a 2.0 GPA and/or have completed less than 67% of all college level courses attempted at GSC.  Requirements are identified online in the Financial Aid Section of the current GSC Catalog.

The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a grant program designed to encourage schools to provide postsecondary education grants to exceptionally needy undergraduate students.  There is no guarantee every eligible student will be able to receive an FSEOG; students are awarded based on the availability of funds at the time financial aid awards are packaged at Gainesville College.

The purpose of the Georgia HERO Scholarship is to provide educational scholarship assistance to members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reservists who served in combat zones and the children and the surviving spouses of such members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reserves.

GSC needs authorization from you to deduct any additional fees from your HOPE book allowance.  In Banner Web Account, select "Financial Aid", "Student Authorization", then "Authorize" and "Submit" on the HOPE Book Authorization.

Georgia's HOPE GED Grant is available to residents of Georgia who earned a General Education Development (GED/high school equivalency) diploma awarded by the Technical College System of Georgia after June 30, 1993. The Grant provides a one-time $500 HOPE award that can be used towards tuition, books, and other educational costs at an eligible public technical college or public or private college or university in a degree, diploma, or certificate program.

Georgia's HOPE Grant is available to residents of Georgia who are attending a Georgia public technical college or public college or university to earn a certificate. Eligibility is not based on a high school graduation date or grade point average. The grant provides full tuition, HOPE-approved mandatory fees, and a book allowance at public institutions.

Georgia's HOPE Scholarship is available to Georgia residents who have demonstrated academic achievement at the high school and/or college level. The scholarship provides funds to address many of the costs associated with tuition, fees, and books for students who are pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree in Georgia's public and private colleges and universities.

A Master Promissory Note (MPN) is the borrower’s promise to repay the funds and provides important language about the borrower’s rights and responsibilities with respect to obtaining and repaying the loan.

Pell Grant is a grant program for undergraduate students who have not completed a first baccalaureate degree. It is designed to assist students who are the least able to contribute toward their basic education expenses.  Pell Grant awards are based on full-time enrollment.  Enrollment in less than 12 semesters hours will reduce the amount received from the Pell Grant.

Parents can borrow a Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS Loan) to help pay your education expenses if you are a dependent undergraduate student enrolled at least half time in an eligible program at an eligible school.

A Preferred Lender List is provided by the institution to assist students in the selection of a lender for their Stafford Loan.  GSC selects lenders based on the best loan repayment benefits.  However, you may choose any lender, including lenders that are not on GSC's Preferred Lender List.

The PROMISE Teacher Scholarship Loan is a component of Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program which provides forgivable loans to students who aspire to be teachers in Georgia public schools. If you commit to teach in a Georgia public school, you will pay less for your education. For a four-year commitment, you can receive up to $6,000 in financial assistance.  GSC students in the Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education for Grades (P-5) may be elgibile.

The Student Aid Report (SAR) is the federal output record that contains a students EFC and all the information provided by the student on the FAFSA. The SAR is sent directly to students.
 
Satisfactory Academic ProgressUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
The U.S. Department of Education mandates that institutions of higher education establish minimum standards of “satisfactory academic progress” (SAP) for students receiving financial aid.  At GSC, your SAP is determined by careful evaluation of qualitative and quantitative criteria.  Determination of SAP will be made at least annually, normally at the time the student initially applies for aid for the school year or when the initial award is made.  Details are found online in the current GSC Catalog.

A scholarship is a sum of money or other aid granted to a student, because of merit, need, etc., to pursue his or her studies.

The School Code, also known as the Federal School Code, is the six-digit code assigned by ED to identify a school.  The School Code for GSC is 001567.

Almost all male U.S. citizens, and male aliens living in the U.S., who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service.  No Federal or State Financial Aid will be awarded to those who fail to register for the Selective Service.

Before your school disburses your Federal Stafford Loan (subsidized or unsubsidized), regulations require that you complete an entrance counseling session. The counseling session provides information about how to manage your student loans, both during and after college.

Before you graduate (or if you drop below half-time attendance), regulations require that you complete an exit counseling session. The counseling session provides information about how to manage your student loans after college.
Subsidized Stafford LoanUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
A Subsidized Stafford Loan is awarded to degree-seeking students on the basis of financial need.  You must be enrolled at least half time (6 semester hours) in a degree seeking program.  If you're eligible for a subsidized loan, the government will pay (subsidize) the interest on your loan while you're in school, for the first six months after you leave school, and if you qualify to have your payments deferred.
Unsubsidized Stafford LoanUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
An Unsubsidized Stafford Loan is available to degree-seeking students regardless of financial need.  You must be enrolled at least half time (6 semester hours) in a degree seeking program.  You are responsible for the interest from the time the unsubsidized loan is disbursed until it's paid in full. You can choose to pay the interest or allow it to accrue (accumulate) and be capitalized (that is, added to the principal amount of your loan). Capitalizing the interest will increase the amount you have to repay.

One out of every three FAFSA filers are selected for verification by the U.S. Department of Education.  If you are selected by the DOE for verification, you will receive notification from GSC Financial Aid Office that additional documents are required before your financial aid award is determined.
